Lifetime Achievement Service to Health Alan Lee, MAS'11
Alan M. Lee is the President of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at RWJUH, and the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center.
As a senior leader at the flagship academic medical center of RWJBarnabas Health, the largest and most comprehensive academic health system in New Jersey, he oversees patient care, clinical quality, operational performance, and patient experience. A proven leader in advancing clinical excellence, Mr. Lee fosters collaboration among Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty physicians, RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group physicians and community physicians to deliver quaternary medical services for New Jersey and the region, while educating and training the next generation of health care professionals. He is also responsible for capital projects. Mr. Lee joined the health system in 2021 as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at RWJUH.
Prior to RWJUH, Mr. Lee served in multiple senior leadership roles at New York Presbyterian (NYP) such as Vice President of Support Services and Patient Experience at NYP/Weil Cornell, then Vice President of Operations at NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, before assuming the role of Chief Operating Officer at NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. In these roles, he led strategic initiatives to improve patient experience, operational efficiency, capital expansion, support services, patient throughput and length of stay management.
Mr. Lee began his career in hospitality management, working in multiple luxury and deluxe hotels in New York City; including Millennium Broadway, The Regent Wall Street Hotel, Ritz-Carlton New York, and at Hudson, an Ian Schrager Hotel.
Mr. Lee serves on the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) board and finance sub-committee, as well as the RWJUH Board of Directors. He has received numerous prestigious awards for leadership and community service, including the Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America Community Service and Leadership award in 2026, the 2024 APPNA-NJ Leadership award, NAHSE NJ Chapter Leadership Excellence award in 2023, a commendation from the City of Newark Municipal Council in 2024, Becker’s “Black Healthcare Leaders to Know” in 2024, ROI-NJ “Influencers – People of Color” in 2023 and 2024, and the Big Apple Health Excellence in Healthcare award in 2020.
A recognized thought leader, he has served as a guest lecturer at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration and Sloan Master of Health Administration programs since 2012, as well as New York University’s Rory Meyers College of Nursing since 2013. He has also been an invited speaker on patient experience at national conferences hosted by Press Ganey, the Cleveland Clinic, and What’s Right in Healthcare (Huron).
As a Fellow of the Academy GE Fellows program for administrative executives, Mr. Lee continues to drive innovation and excellence in healthcare leadership.
Mr. Lee earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Edward’s University and a Master of Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
