FDU Caps Smallwood's Residency with Fundraising Event for Fine Arts

Acclaimed artist Philip Smallwood spent this past spring as Fairleigh Dickinson University’s School of the Arts inaugural artist-in-residence. Smallwood's watercolor paintings are renowned for their ultra-realistic nature, meticulous attention to detail, and evocative use of technique. His ability to transform ordinary scenes into breathtaking masterpieces has garnered him critical acclaim and a dedicated following.

Throughout his residency at FDU, Smallwood showcased an array of stunning artworks, capturing the essence of the surrounding landscapes, architecture, and human emotion. His captivating brushwork and distinct style left a lasting impression on the students.

One of the primary goals of the artist-in-residence program is to inspire and mentor the next generation of artists. Smallwood embraced this responsibility with unwavering enthusiasm. He conducted interactive workshops, engaging discussions, and personal critiques, allowing students to gain invaluable insights into the world of watercolor painting on both FDU’s Florham and Metropolitan Campuses. Smallwood encouraged experimentation, pushing boundaries, and embracing the artistic journey, emphasizing the importance of both technical proficiency and creative expression. Through his patient guidance and infectious passion, he fostered an environment where students felt empowered to explore their own artistic voice and take risks in their work.

On September 21, FDU hosted an event at the artist’s home to wrap up his residency, support art education at FDU and to augment the recently announced Frederick Smallwood Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. See the photos from the event.

The event raised funds in support of FDU’s Fine Arts program and the Smallwood scholarship fund and a wonderful time was had by all. In addition, during the event one of Smallwood’s paintings was purchased to showcase in Hennessy Hall on the Florham campus as part of efforts to bring additional focus on diversity within that space.

Thanks to the continued generosity of the artist, selected works will remain available on a first come basis with 50% of the proceeds supporting the Frederick Smallwood, Jr. Memorial scholarship fund at FDU. These are available upon request. Available works can be found online. For more information on available works or to schedule a gallery visit, please contact: P. SMALLWOOD ART.
